An Afriat Theorem for the collective model of household consumption

چکیده
An Afriat Theorem for the Collective Model of Household Consumption We provide a nonparametric ‘revealed preference’ characterization of rational household behavior in terms of the collective consumption model, while accounting for general (possibly non-convex) individual preferences. We establish a Collective Axiom of Revealed Preference (CARP), which provides a necessary and sufficient condition for data consistency with collective rationality. Our main result takes the form of a ‘collective’ version of the Afriat Theorem for rational behavior in terms of the unitary model. This theorem has some interesting implications. With only a finite set of observations, the nature of consumption externalities (positive or negative) in the intra-household allocation process is non-testable. The same non-testability conclusion holds for privateness (with or without externalities) or publicness of consumption. By contrast, concavity of individual utility functions (representing convex preferences) turns out to be testable. In addition, monotonicity is testable for the model that assumes all household consumption is public. JEL Classification: D11, D12, D13, C14

Revealed Preference Tests of Collectively Rational Consumption Behavior: Formulations and Algorithms
The word ‘economics’ stems from the Greek ‘oikos nomein’, which is literally translated as ‘running the household’. Households form the cornerstone of our society and, as a result, household consumption decisions drive a huge part of our economy. It is by now well established that the unitary model, which assumes that households behave as single decision makers, is not adequate to describe the ...

Opening the Black Box of Intra-Household Decision-Making: Theory and Non-Parametric Empirical Tests of General Collective Consumption Models We non-parametrically test a general collective consumption model with public consumption and externalities inside the household. We further propose a novel approach to model special cases of the general collective model. These special cases include altern...
متن کاملEnergy Consumption Modeling in Residential Buildings
In recent years, the issue of energy consumption modeling techniques in the building sector has been widely considered by researchers and managers. Researches indicate that energy consumption in residential sector is one of the main parts of the total consumption. Moreover, the urban residence is supposed as a significant consumer of energy in every country and therefore a focus for energy cons...

D’Alessandro’s (2010) model investigates the impact of total government spending on private consumption but according to Barro’s (1981) suggestion, the impact of two groups of government spending on private consumption can be studied separately. The fist group produces utility affecting services for household and the second group is as an input in the private production process. So in the pre...
متن کاملAnalysis of Residential Load Components: Case of Tehran Province 1385-1397
In the present study, due to the high cost of smart metering, the electricity load data of Tehran is decomposed to identify the energy consumption pattern and the energy-saving potentials of households. The present study identifies household consumption in times of low, medium and peak load. To identify the household load curve, the aggregated hourly load data is decomposed and its components a...
